Microsoft officially unveiled Internet Explorer 9 today. It is, without question, the most ambitious browser release Microsoft has ever undertaken, despite the beta label it is an impressively polished product. Is it fast enough? Is it compatible enough? Is it cool enough to win back former IE users? You be the judge and let me know.

Server Drive Failure
This past week we identified a failed hard drive on one of our client's Server. Our client was not aware of this until we reported it to them. We saved our client from downtime and lose of productivity because we configure our client's server with redundancy, such as RAID, dual power supply, ECC RAM, etc...This one way we help our client’s stay in business and remember if your network is reliable we did IT.

How far would you sacrifice service for price?
I had many sales and presentation meeting these past few months and I have noticed the attempts of business owner’s suggestion of lowering the price of our services. I understand the need to negotiate and bargain for a fair market value, I understand the need to justify lowering the overall cost while still improving the quality of service. However, the recurring message I heard over and over is that the person or company providing the "service" Information Technology (IT) support does not or has not provided them with the value or level of service the client has expected. In other words the level of service has degraded and the perception is that, it could be better, it could be more…more service, better respond time, more proactive support, or simply more attention to detail.
The perception of lack of service is hard to change once it has been engraved on the unsatisfied client and perception becomes reality. So much that the business owner, the administrative assistant, the CFO or office manager go on a silent quest to find a new IT support company that will satisfy that void. What can be done to fulfill that need? And what do we do as support professionals do to create a longer lasting presence that will satisfy the attention needed by our clients?
I have implemented several rules and guide lines to follow:
1. DO NOT leave the client’s premise until all IT support business is completed. Stay as long as needed.
2. ALWAYS leave room between appointments as there will always be more work than expected. This will allow you to call ahead and let your next appointment know if you are running late.
3. IT IS GOOD to be busy and timely but do not rush or make your client feel you are too busy for them. Slow down at least while you have face to face meetings with your client.
4. ALWAYS ask if there is more items that need to be addressed before you leave. You are providing a service and to ensure you maximize their experience and your time should be your priority.
5. NEVER leave anything to chance (i.e. Do not leave, stay and make sure the server reboots and connectivity is established before you leave.) Stay that extra 15 min and test, test, test everything. A happy client will not mind paying for peace of mind.
6. NEVER leave a client on their own or leave them to finish your job. If you start, you should finish and test. There is nothing worse than been handed off more work or a responsibility meant for someone else (the IT professional.)
7. BE UNDERSTANDING and supportive of the needs of your client. If you listen you will understand and do better.
8. CLARIFYING is very important, to have a meeting of the minds. Do not have arguments; set expectations of the outcome this will be beneficial to all. By following these guide lines you will reach and outperform your client’s expectations.
Why are many of these listed items not followed by my peer IT Professionals?
I will continue on my next comment…

WIFI or Cable my office Network?
This past week a prospect called for assistance with their network, very slow and problems connecting. Through the interview I discovered that all their computers are connected via a wireless (WIFI) environment. When a business depends on network resources (shared data, applications, printers, etc.) it is critical to ensure network integrity, so all users are productive and avoid loss of employee’s productive time due to downtime and avoid lowering employee morale from the constant interruption of their work flow due to computer related problems. It has been our experience that the best way to connect computers and minimize downtime is to hardwire your business network. Connecting a group of computers via Ethernet (100/1000 Mbps) is still the norm and most effective. WIFI is an excellent way to provide guest and non critical connectivity access to network resources or to the Internet. We had this same concerned asked of us last year from another organization that was planning to implement a 100% WIFI environment at their new building, we convinced them by making a solid case that WIFI is not ready for business critical applications. The expense to cable the new building with an Ethernet infrastructure will be worth eliminating problems with WIFI later on. Here are a number of factors that can cause access point signal to deteriorate and have low network performance or to simply to stop working. And this could be intermittent, sometimes it works and other times it does not and could be hard to troubleshoot just by its very nature. In many instances any appliance that operates on the same frequency level (2.4 GHz) as 802.11b or 802.11g can cause interference with your wireless network, the source could be from your neighboring business within your building, next door, across the street, etc. Be sure to keep cordless phones, microwaves and other electrical equipment at least 3 feet away from any access point. Devices using the same radio channel, will cause interference and could also be the culprit. Even the equipment from your manufacture may be the determinant factor of why you are having WIFI issues (consumer class vs. business class or stronger vs. weaker) better equipment cost more and has more feature to mitigate connectivity problems and more configuration choices and cost more to manage. We have found wireless networking to have many security issues; there are a great number of security risks associated with the current wireless protocols. Hackers have found wireless networks relatively easy to break into, and even use wireless technology to crack into wired networks. As a result, it's very important that enterprises define effective wireless security policies that guard against unauthorized access to important resources. Many of our prospect clients do not understand how important enforcement to wireless security and what it means. The risks to users of wireless technology have increased as this service has become more popular and easier to deploy. After all these findings and for Peace of Mind, insurance of a higher performing network, less downtime, increased employee morale and a more secure environment. I will continue to recommend that you hardwire your office with Ethernetstandard cabling (Cat5e/Cat6.) And use WIFI limited to guest network to avoid having problems with slow performance, network interruption, loss of signal, security, etc… It is priceless when you think about it. The cost to hardwire your network is very well worth the investment. The cost of a WIFI network may seem lower at first. But in the long run it is more expensive. Windows 7 setup secrets
As of May 5, the general public is finally allowed to download the official Windows 7Release Candidate. It’s been up on BitTorrent networks since mid-April, and developers with MSDN or TechNet subscriptions have had access to it since April. But those groups constitute a tiny fraction of the people who are seeing the Windows 7 release candidate for the first time with its public release. (You can find downloads and installation instructions at Microsoft’s website.)
For the benefit of the early adopters and those who patiently wait, I’ve been gathering information on the right and wrong ways to set up Windows 7. For the past week or so I’ve been installing and upgrading the RC code on a wide variety of systems—notebooks and desktops, with and without touch and tablet capabilities, with and without TV tuners and Blu-ray drives, as clean installs and upgrades, in x86 and x64 flavors, documenting the process.
In this post, I want to share seven of the lessons I’ve learned along the way, including a few setup secrets that even some Windows experts don’t know about.
Secret #1: Choose the right Setup option
Secret #2: Start with a clean disk
Secret #3: Back up your old drivers first
Secret #4: Do a nondestructive clean install
Secret #5: You need less disk space than you think
Secret #6: Unblock the upgrade path for Windows 7 beta
Secret #7: Unlock those extra editions
